Students will focus on techniques, applications of materials and how a painting is developed. An ideal class for the intermediate oil painter, it will help push artists to the next level by demonstrating and experiencing the steps for success. Experienced artists are welcome to join and will benefit from the exchange of techniques, information and experience. Materials list provided.


Foundation to Painting (for Jr High & High School)

An excellent start to your drawing and painting future! Students who wish to start their painting experience with a classical foundation Objectives are to learn the power of observation while learning color mixture, application, painting of forms, modeling and color identification. A series of studio still lifes are the main object lesson with a concluding class of a demo and follow along still life. Begin with an exploration of simple shapes, advancing to still lifes with fruit and other utensils. Taught in oil, but basic instruction applies to all mediums. Color Works

Learn about the exciting world of color which surrounds all of us. We will study and work with the terms as applied to color: value; tint-tone-shade; warm and cool; contrast and analogous; primary-secondary-tertiary. This information will be reinforced through the practice of simple exercises and paintings. An excellent course for beginners and intermediate students who want to know more about how COLOR WORKS. Introduction to Pastel
Instructor: Yvette Rattenbury

Introducing the fundamentals of pastel painting, starting with basic drawing, color, value and composition.  The class will work with the hardest to the softest pastels and from smoother paper to the heavily sanded ones.  Subjects will include still life and photos when indoors and en Plein aire when the weather permits.  Demonstrations, one-on-one attention and end-of-class critique will be given.  A material list will be provided on application.  Some materials can be provided by the instructor for a nominal fee.

What better way to experience the beauty of our surroundings in Scituate, than capture it with an original oil painting. Both a Wenesday evening course as well as a Saturday morning Plein aire Course are available. (please indicate which you plan to attend on the application.) Learn the basics of outdoor color, light, perspective, distance and draftsmanship. Take advantage of the years of experience in Plein aire painting from your instructor with his helpful tips on making your art really zing. Outdoor classes can be rescheduled to fit the convenience of class participants.

This course could well be called ‘learning how we see.’ Drawing is a learned observational skill which can be accomplished with little difficulty after practicing a few simple techniques. Lessons will include measuring proportions, understanding perspective, discovering positive-negative spaces, contour drawings and various kinds of light and shadow. Time will be spent on drawing with various materials: papers, pens, pencils, markers and charcoal. A supply list with be sent. Questions call Esther Maschio at 781-545-4048.

Watercolor—Beginning & Intermediate.

A highly successful artist with experience in both teaching and commercial art. Working in both these fields allows her to bring added dimension to her own work and to her teaching. Her watercolor class is suitable for the beginner and as well as the advanced student. Mary Beth provides a relaxed atmosphere which encourages growth and development. Each class will include demonstrations, critiques along with individual attention. Sessions will focus on painting from still life and photographs emphasizing technique so that the life behind the composition can emerge from the creator onto the canvas. Materials list provided.

Make Your Own Glass Beads
Instructor: Marj Bates 9:30AM - 4:30PM

Learn how to make glass beads with lots of individual attention and hands-on time from nationally recognized glass artist,  Marj Bates. You will be taught the ancient art of lampwork. Each student will be provided with their own workstation, all the tools and glass necessary to make Venetian glass beads. Each design is achieved by layering and manipulating different colors of glass with handmade designs that include gold and silver, careful annealing or cooling in a kiln in a precise and slow process assures a high quality glass object that will not break.   These workshops are held in Marj’s brand new light-filled studio by the sea on lighthouse point in Scituate Harbor.  Directions to Marj’s studio will be given at the time of registration.  A great workshop to do with a friend or two!

Metalsmithing
Instructor: Marj Bates Ongoing Mondays, 5:00 - 7:00PM

Jewelry making!  Students will learn to cut, shape, solder & polish silver. Starting with raw silver sheet or wire we will make a bracelet & set a stone in a ring. You will then make a design of your own choice! These workshops are held in Marj’s brand new light-filled studio by the sea on lighthouse point in Scituate Harbor.  Directions to Marj’s studio will be given at the time of registration. Signup is ongoing.
Classes are sold in blocks of 8 classes at $225 per block.

Woodcarving

For beginners to experience. Learn the basics and start on individual projects. Limited to eight students per session. Make a quarterboard, house number sign, an eagle or anything you can think of. Each session consist of students at different levels, each working on their own project. Basic materials are provided. These lessons are held at Kukstis Woodcarving. There are lots of dates to choose from.

WORKSHOPS
Let’s Paint Figures Even If You Think You Can’t
Instructor: Ros Farbush
September 21 (Sunday). 10:00AM - 4:00PM

Ros will provide some basic drawing information so that you will be able to understand and draw a figure. The recipient of numerous local and national art awards and a member of the Copley Art Society, Ros has held dozens of solo and juried group exhibitions during her distinguished career.  Her one day workshop will include demonstrations and critiques along with individual attention working from a model. Ros’ medium is acrylic, but feel free to bring your medium of choice. $80 Memebers/ $100 non-members

Plein aire Weekend
The “Alla Prima” Approach to Painting
Instructor: Dianne Panarelli Miller
October 4 (Saturday)10AM - 4:30PM

This  workshop will study Plein aire in the “alla prima” (all-in-one sitting) approach. Alternately in bad weather, still life will be presented using that approach. Students will paint simple set ups in a controlled setting using a full color palette. Through exercises and demonstrations, Dianne will go over the academics and talk about color, composition and technique in a simple easy language. Focusing on discipline, she works with each student at their level to keep their painting moving in the right direction. Both beginners and advanced artists will benefit from this class. A supply list will be provided.

Designing a Painting
Intructor: Vcevy Strekalovsky
October 5 (Sunday) 10:00AM - 4:30PM

Winner of last year’s Plein aire Event and a recent exhibitor at the SAA’s Front Street Art Gallery, Vcevy enjoys painting figures, portraits, still life, and wildlife and livestock in their natural setting. His workshop will stress drawing and composition, values, edges and color temperature in his workshop. Plans are to work en Plein aire weather permitting; alternate plans are for still life work. Vcvy’s primary medium is oil, but feel free to work in watercolor, acrylic or charcoal & pencil.
$90 members/$110 nonmembers.


Study with both Dianne Panarelli and Vcevy Strekalovsky. Sample the approach of two Plein aire masters in one weekend. Take both sessions and save: $165members/$205 nonmembers.

SAA Workshops in the Healing Arts: Reiki Certification
Workshop Instuctor: Michelle Levangie, Reiki Master
Level 1 Certification. September 20 (Saturday) 9:00AM - 5:00PM or October 11 (Saturday) 9:00AM - 5:00 PM

Reiki is an ancient gentle and non-invasive healing art which seeks to balances the bodies energy centers and ease pain and stress.  A reiki treatment consists of a 1 to 1 ½ hour treatment.
This one day workshop include the history of reiki, basic energy awareness, especially chakra education, and a guided meditation. Students will be instructed in and experience both a self-reiki treatment and a reiki treatment to a client by working on each other. An explanation of Reiki certification is included. Please bring a lunch. Water and snacks will be provided. Certification will be presented at the end of the day.
Level 2 Certification. November 1 (Saturday) 9 am to 5 pm or December 13 (Saturday) 9 am to 5 pm.
Level 2 certification leads practitioners to delve deeper into reiki’s healing process and to fine tune their healing techniques. Reiki two certification naturally follows reiki one and provides an acceleration in healing energy and an accompanying increase in their ability and knowledge. This healing modality can bring peace of mind and relief of pain.
Once attaining this level of certification, students may charge their clients for treatments.
Reiki 2 Workshop is on Saturday, March 1 from 9 am to 5 pm. Please bring a lunch. Water and snacks will be provided. Certification will be presented at the end of the day. For questions contact Michelle Levangie at 781-424-0784.
